Message from
the President

Dear friends,
We are through with half the year & the annual meeting is fast approaching. After an academic lull during the first half, we have started this year's mid-year programmes with a bang. June end brought us a well attended & very well organised workshop on "Medical Renal Disease" at Bangaluru. The time was too short for complete justice to such a vast & challenging topic, but the overall coverage of basic algorythm to diagnosis as well as an exposure to direct immunofluorescence was well delivered. The slides available for viewing were remarkable in variety & merit special mention.
The CME on recent advances in Gynacologic pathology is scheduled to be held in Mumbai in September end. I am sure it will be well attended by & be of immense benefit to practicing young pathologists.
Regards to one & all,

Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi

Secretary and Treasurer's Column

My warm greetings and best wishes to you all. I extend a very warm welcome to all the new members who have joined the IAP-ID lately and look forwards to their active participation and contri-bution to the activities of the Division. The IAP-ID due to its interesting and excellent academic activities has been attracting increasing numbers of new members which is very good for the growth and future development of the Division.
The Mid Year Teaching Programme of the IAP-ID was held on 29th June 2008 at the M. S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore, and was a Workshop on “Medical Renal Diseases” organized by Dr. Nanda Kishore Alva and his team. The Programme Director was Dr. N. Jayaram. The Workshop was excellent and provided hands on experience on various aspects of kidney biopsies in renal diseases and was a very fruitful and interesting experience for all the participants. On behalf of the IAP-ID, I wish to express our gratitude and thanks to Dr. Saraswathi G. Rao (Organizing Chairperson), Dr. Nanda Kishore Alva (Organizing Secretary), Dr. N. Jayaram (Programme Director) and their team for organizing the same.

In a couple of months, on the 27th and 28th September 2008, we will have the IAP-ID 11th Annual CME on “Newer Perspectives on Gynaecologic Pathology” to be held at the P. D. Hinduja National Hospital & Medical Research Center, Mumbai, organized by Dr. Anita S. Bhaduri. The CME will cover newer insights, current trends in diagnosis and understanding of gynaecologic conditions and their clinical relevance and intends to address unique problems and challenges faced in current practice of Gynaecologic Pathology. The CME will be conducted by an eminent faculty of both international and national resource persons and promises to be very useful to all those who attend it. Later in the year, on 15th December 2008, we will have the IAP-ID Annual Conference along with the IAPM National Conference (as part of APCON 2008) at SRM Medical College, Kattankulathur. The Scientific Programme of the meeting is very interesting and promises to be a veritable academic feast and I am sure that the meeting being organized by Prof. Taralakshmi V. Venugopal will be a grand success. I urge the members to attend these academic programmes of the IAP-ID in large numbers and look forwards to meeting you at these meetings.
On behalf of the IAP-ID I would like to express gratitude and thanks to the Karnataka Chapter of IAPM and Organizing Committee, Workshop on “Medical Renal Diseases”, for their generous contribution of Rs. 5000/- to the IAP-ID.

The IAP-ID would also like to thank M/s Roche Diagnostics India Pvt Ltd, Chennai, for their advertisements in the publications of the IAP-ID for this full year and M/s Millipore (India) Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore, for their advertisement in this issue of the Newsletter. Both these were arranged through the good offices of Dr. Sujay Prasad, Bangalore, for which the IAP-ID expresses its gratitude and thanks to him.
Yet again, I earnestly appeal to all the members who have not yet paid their membership fees for this year, or are in arrears, to kindly pay their dues immediately.

I end by sending my warmest good wishes to you and your families.

It is my happy privilege to present to you this issue of the IAP-ID Newsletter (Vol 11, No 2, July 2008) encapsulating recent events in the Indian Division of the IAP as well as providing information on forthcoming activities.
The Newsletter is a vehicle that keeps members updated of the various activities of the IAP-Indian Division as well as the IAP. I appeal to all those members involved in various activities of the IAP and the IAP-ID to send their inputs to me so as the relevant material may be incorporated in the Divisional Newsletter so as to make the Newsletter more informative and effective. The Newsletter has seen many innovations so as to make it both more informative and attractive to the members and this has been my constant endeavor since inception and I shall strive to see that this trend continues.
The Newsletter needs to be self financing so as not to drain the corpus of the IAP-ID. I once again earnestly appeal to all members to use your good offices to arrange sponsors and advertisers for the IAP-ID Newsletter. The sponsors / advertisers should send their advertisement material and Demand Drafts in favour of “Secretary & Treasurer, IAP- Indian Division” payable at “Panaji (Goa)” and send it to the following address: Dr.Francisco Couto, Secretary & Treasurer, IAPIndian Division, 714, La Campala Colony, Panaji 403001, Goa.

Bangalore

Inauguration of the Workshop

The Mid Year Teaching Programme of the IAP-ID was held on 29th June 2008 at the M. S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore, and was a Workshop on “Medical Renal Diseases” organized by the Karnataka Chapter of IAPM and the Department of Pathology, M. S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore. Dr. Saraswathi G. Rao was the Organizing Chairman and Dr. Nanda Kishore Alva was the Organizing Secretary. The Scientific Programme was co-ordinated by Dr. N. Jayaram who was the Programme Director. The CME was inaugurated by Dr. S. Kumar, Principal & Dean, M. S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore, in the distinguished presence of Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi (President, IAP-ID), Dr. Francisco Couto (Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID), Dr. Saraswathi G. Rao (Organizing Chairperson), Dr. Nanda Kishore Alva (Organizing Secretary), Dr. N. Jayaram (Programme Director) and other dignitaries.

The Workshop was well attended and had delegates attending from all over the country. Being a hands on Workshop, the Organizers had restricted the delegate number to 50 participants which provided an excellent opportunity for all the delegates to acquire the necessary skills under the guidance of the Faculty. All aspects of interpretation of kidney biopsies in various medical renal diseases were very well covered by the distinguished Faculty which included Dr. N. Jayaram (Bangalore), Dr. Swarnalatha Gowrishanker (Hyderabad) and Dr. Mahesha V. K (Bangalore).

The topics covered included “Introduction to Renal Biopsy”, “Primary Glomerular Diseases”, “Secondary Glomerular Diseases” and “Tubulo Interstitial and Vascular Diseases”. In the afternoon session, the delegates were divided into two batches for the practical sessions. One batch were demonstrated the various techniques involved in immunofluorescence in kidney biopsies and interpretation of the same and this session was ably conducted by Dr. Mahesha V. K and his team.

The other batch were given slides of kidney biopsies of various lesions to view under the microscope and a description of the same was provided along side which made it easy for the participants to understand things. This session was very well and painstakingly conducted by Dr. N. Jayaram and Dr. Swarnalatha Gowrishanker who were at hand to demonstrate and explain the various lesions and clarify any doubts or problems the participants had. The batches were interchanged at the end of their respective sessions. A CD of the CME was distributed to the delegates by the Organizers.

The Workshop was excellent and extremely well organized and conducted and was very fruitful for all the participants. At the short Valedictory function Dr. Saraswathi G. Rao (Chairperson of the Workshop and President, Karnataka Chapter of IAPM) presented a cheque of Rs. 5000/- to the IAP-ID on behalf of the Karnataka Chapter of IAPM and the Organizing Committee of the Workshop. On behalf of the IAP-ID, Dr. Francisco Couto (Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID) expressed gratitude and thanks for this fine gesture and generous contribution.
