My warm greetings and best wishes to you all. I extend a very warm welcome to all the new members who have joined the IAP-ID lately and look forwards to their active participation and contri-bution to the activities of the Division. The IAP-ID due to its interesting and excellent academic activities has been attracting increasing numbers of new members which is very good for the growth and future development of the Division. In a couple of months, on the 27th and 28th September 2008, we will have the IAP-ID 11th Annual CME on “Newer Perspectives on Gynaecologic Pathology” to be held at the P. D. Hinduja National Hospital & Medical Research Center, Mumbai, organized by Dr. Anita S. Bhaduri. The CME will cover newer insights, current trends in diagnosis and understanding of gynaecologic conditions and their clinical relevance and intends to address unique problems and challenges faced in current practice of Gynaecologic Pathology. The CME will be conducted by an eminent faculty of both international and national resource persons and promises to be very useful to all those who attend it. Later in the year, on 15th December 2008, we will have the IAP-ID Annual Conference along with the IAPM National Conference (as part of APCON 2008) at SRM Medical College, Kattankulathur. The Scientific Programme of the meeting is very interesting and promises to be a veritable academic feast and I am sure that the meeting being organized by Prof. Taralakshmi V. Venugopal will be a grand success. I urge the members to attend these academic programmes of the IAP-ID in large numbers and look forwards to meeting you at these meetings. | GUEST SPEAKER FOR IAP-ID ANNUAL MEETING 2008

This year for the IAP-ID Annual Meeting 2008 at SRM Medical College Hospital & Medical Research Center, Kattankalathur (near Chennai), our invited Guest Speaker will be Dr. Jan G. van den Tweel, Professor & Chairman, Department of Pathology, University Medical Center, Utrecht, The Netherlands. The IAP-ID is deeply honoured and happy to have Prof. Jan van den Tweel attend the Meeting. A brief biodata of Prof. van den Tweel is given here under for the benefit of the members: Prof. Jan G van den Tweel studied Medicine at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, where he graduated in 1971. In the same year he finished his PhD thesis at this University. After 4 years of research in the field of the MHC complex in Leiden, he did his Pathology Residency training at the University Medical Center in Leiden and a subsequent Haematopathology Fellowship at the USC Medical Center, Los Angeles, USA, with Dr. Robert Lukes from July 1976 to April 1978. This fellowship was awarded by the Dutch Organization for Pure Research and Dutch Cancer Society. He was also awarded a fellowship by the Niels Stensen Association for three months research in different laboratories in the USA in 1973. Prof. Jan van den Tweel has held many distinguished and important positions in his long and illustrious career. These include Chairman, Department of Pathology Atrium Hospital , Heerlen, The Netherlands (1978-1985); Acting Chairman department of Pathology Academic Medical Centre, Amsterdam (1988-1990); Treasurer, Netherlands Society of Pathology (1989-1993); Secretary, Specialist Section Pathology, European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) (1991-2002); Founder and President (1991-2002) of the European Bone Marrow Pathology working group; Chairman, Examination Committee of the Specialist Section Pathology UEMS (1996-2005); President of the British Division of the International Academy of Pathology (2002-2004); President of the 16th European Congress of Pathology, Maastricht (1997); and, President of the 24th International Congress of the International Academy of Pathology, Amsterdam (2002). Prof. Jan van den Tweel holds several important positions in the University Medical Center Utrecht like Vice chairman, Central Committee of Medical Specialist Training; Chairman, Examination Committee Medical Faculty; Member, committee for acceptance of foreign doctors; Co-ordinator / Examiner Oncology courses; and Co-ordinator / Examiner General Pathology courses. He also has several regional and national functions like Member, Consilium Pathologicum; Reference Pathologist, Myelodysplastic Syndromes; and, Member of different oncology working groups. Prof. Jan van den Tweel is on the Editorial Board of several international Journals like Diagnostic Pathology; Histopathology; and, Applied Immunohistochemistry and Molecular Pathology. He is also a Reviewer for Swiss Cancer League and Journal of Clinical Pathology. | IAP – ID |
The IAP-ID has the following programmes during the course of the year: Those members desirous of organizing and hosting the Mid Year Teaching Programme 2009 should send their concrete proposals with the theme of the meeting to the Secretary & Treasurer, Dr. Francisco Couto. The 12th IAP-ID Annual CME 2009 would be part of the 6th Asia Pacific IAP Congress 2009 being held at Kochi, Kerala, from 20th to 23rd August 2009. For the Annual Meeting 2009 (held along with the IAPM Conference), those desirous of being Moderators for the Symposium or Slide Seminar should send in their names along with the proposed title of the Symposium and Slide Seminar to the Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID. Also as per the decision of the General Body of the IAP-ID certain topics have been suggested as possible subjects for the Slide Seminar and Symposium. Members desirous of being Moderators for any of these topics should send their names to the Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID. However, as per the decision of the Council and General Body of the IAP-ID, the person selected as the moderator shall be the one who is felt to be best suited to be for the particular topic of the Symposium or Slide Seminar. All proposals should reach the Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID, by 15th October 2008, so as the same proposals could be discussed and approved by the Council and General Body of the IAP-ID. of IAP. The IAP-ID Newsletter is also featured on this site as well as

| 6th ASIA PACIFIC IAP CONGRESS

Le Meridian Resort and Convention Center The 6th Asia Pacific Congress of the Inter-national Academy of Pathology (IAP) under the auspices of the International Academy of Pathology - Indian Division (IAP-ID) and organized on its behalf by the Kerala Chapter of IAPM will be held from 20th to 23rd August 2009 at the Le Meridian Resort and Convention Center, Kochi, Kerala. |
| IAP-ID 11th ANNUAL CME 2008 |

| IAP-ID Associate Members |
Membership of IAP-ID as Associate Members has been started from this year for Post Graduate Students in Pathology and others. These Associate members would have no voting rights or other statutory rights of full members and would have to become full members of the IAP-ID on attaining their post graduate qualification. The Annual Membership fee for Associate member is Rs. 250. |
IAP-ID MID YEAR TEACHING PROGRAMME 2008

Inauguration of the Workshop The Mid Year Teaching Programme of the IAP-ID was held on 29th June 2008 at the M. S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore, and was a Workshop on “Medical Renal Diseases” organized by the Karnataka Chapter of IAPM and the Department of Pathology, M. S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore. Dr. Saraswathi G. Rao was the Organizing Chairman and Dr. Nanda Kishore Alva was the Organizing Secretary. The Scientific Programme was co-ordinated by Dr. N. Jayaram who was the Programme Director. The CME was inaugurated by Dr. S. Kumar, Principal & Dean, M. S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore, in the distinguished presence of Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi (President, IAP-ID), Dr. Francisco Couto (Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID), Dr. Saraswathi G. Rao (Organizing Chairperson), Dr. Nanda Kishore Alva (Organizing Secretary), Dr. N. Jayaram (Programme Director) and other dignitaries. The Workshop was well attended and had delegates attending from all over the country. Being a hands on Workshop, the Organizers had restricted the delegate number to 50 participants which provided an excellent opportunity for all the delegates to acquire the necessary skills under the guidance of the Faculty. All aspects of interpretation of kidney biopsies in various medical renal diseases were very well covered by the distinguished Faculty which included Dr. N. Jayaram (Bangalore), Dr. Swarnalatha Gowrishanker (Hyderabad) and Dr. Mahesha V. K (Bangalore). The topics covered included “Introduction to Renal Biopsy”, “Primary Glomerular Diseases”, “Secondary Glomerular Diseases” and “Tubulo Interstitial and Vascular Diseases”. In the afternoon session, the delegates were divided into two batches for the practical sessions. One batch were demonstrated the various techniques involved in immunofluorescence in kidney biopsies and interpretation of the same and this session was ably conducted by Dr. Mahesha V. K and his team. The other batch were given slides of kidney biopsies of various lesions to view under the microscope and a description of the same was provided along side which made it easy for the participants to understand things. This session was very well and painstakingly conducted by Dr. N. Jayaram and Dr. Swarnalatha Gowrishanker who were at hand to demonstrate and explain the various lesions and clarify any doubts or problems the participants had. The batches were interchanged at the end of their respective sessions. A CD of the CME was distributed to the delegates by the Organizers. The Workshop was excellent and extremely well organized and conducted and was very fruitful for all the participants. At the short Valedictory function Dr. Saraswathi G. Rao (Chairperson of the Workshop and President, Karnataka Chapter of IAPM) presented a cheque of Rs. 5000/- to the IAP-ID on behalf of the Karnataka Chapter of IAPM and the Organizing Committee of the Workshop. On behalf of the IAP-ID, Dr. Francisco Couto (Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID) expressed gratitude and thanks for this fine gesture and generous contribution. Dr. Francisco Couto also conveyed the appreciation and thanks of the IAP-ID to Dr. Saraswathi G. Rao (Organizing Chairperson), Dr. Nanda Kishore Alva (Organizing Secretary), Dr. N. Jayaram (Programme Director) and their team for organizing the Workshop. |
