At the outset I would like to wish you and your families a very Happy and Prosperous New Year 2008. I also extend a warm welcome to all the new members who have joined the IAP-ID in 2008. Due to its very active and dynamic academic programmes we continue to see the happy trend of more and more Pathologists wanting to join the IAP-ID and I hope these new members will actively participate and contribute to the activities of the Division. On November 26th, 2007 we had the highly successful IAP-ID Annual Conference held as usual in conjunction with the IAPM national Conference as part of the conjoint APCON 2007 Conference held at PGIMER, Chandigarh. On behalf of the IAP-ID I would like to express our gratitude and thanks to Dr. Kusum Joshi (Chairperson), Dr. Rakesh Kumar Vasishta and the Organizing Committee of APCON 2007 Chandigarh for the wonderful arrangements in hosting the IAP-ID Annual Meeting held on the 26th November 2007 at Chandigarh. The arrangements were excellent and the meeting was a grand success. Our profuse thanks are also due to the Guest Speaker Prof. Jaime Prat from Spain for his wonderful lecture and slide seminar and to the Special Invitee Prof. Ann Marie Nelson for her wonderful lecture. The IAP-ID would also like to thank Prof. Manoj K. Singh and his team (Slide Seminar on "Melanotic Lesions of the Skin") and to Prof. Kusum Joshi and her team (Symposium on "Interstitial Lung Diseases") for their wonderful scientific presentations. As usual, this year too we have very interesting academic programmes in store. The Mid Year Teaching Programme will be held around June 2008 at Bangalore on the important topic of "Medical Renal Diseases" and will be organized by Dr. N. Jayaram and his team. I am sure that the Programme will be a very fruitful and interesting experience for all the participants. Later, in September, we will have the IAP-ID 11th Annual CME on the very current topic of "Newer Perspectives in Gynecologic Pathology" to be conducted by Dr. Anita Bhaduri and her team at the P. D. Hinduja National Hospital, Mumbai. In December, we will have the IAP-ID Annual Conference along with the IAPM National Conference (APCON 2008) at Chennai. Besides the Guest Lecture and a Slide Seminar by the invited foreign speaker, the scientific programme includes a Slide Seminar on "Non Neoplastic Paediatric Pathology" to be moderated by Dr. B. M. Kandalkar (Mumbai) and the Symposium on "Pathology of Aging" to be moderated by Dr. Medha Tatke (New Delhi). I urge the members to attend these academic programmes of the IAP-ID in large numbers and actively participate in them. The IAP-ID would also like to thank M/s Roche Diagnostics India Pvt Ltd, Chennai, for their advertisements in publications of the IAP-ID for this year. The IAP-ID congratulates and welcomes the new Councilors Dr. K. S. Ratnakar (Hyderabad) and Dr. S. Sankar (Trivandrum), who were elected at the Annual Meeting held at the PGIMER, Chandigarh, on 26th November 2007. For the benefit of the members their brief biodata is given below: Dr. K. S. RATNAKAR Prof. K. S. Ratnakar has been the President (1998) and earlier Secretary (1993 1995) of the Indian Association of Pathologists & Microbiologists; Former Chairman, Karnataka State Chapter of Indian Association of Pathology & Microbiology (KCIAPM); Former Editor - in -Chief, Indian Journal of Pathology and Microbiology (IJPM); former Assistant Chief Editor, Bahrain Medical Bulletin; and reviewer for Indian Journal of Opthalmology. He is a member of several professional bodies like International Academy of Pathology- Indian Division (IAP-ID), Indian Association of Pathologists & Microbiologists (IJPM), All India Ophthalmological Society and A. P. Ophthalmic Society. Prof. K. S. Ratnakar has been the proud reciepient of several prestigious awards like Padmabhushan Dr.P.Siva Reddy Gold Medal Oration Award; Dr. S. Mungekar’s IMA Award; Justice Umamaheswaram Oration Award; Outstanding Young Person Karnataka State Jaycees Award 1983; “Guest of Honour” Verheoff Society, USA, 1993; International Scholar Award, RPB, USA, 1993; “Vijay Shree” Award 1997 of India International Friendship Society; Prof. Subramanyam Gold Medal Oration 1999; Narendra Dutta Prize 2001; Dr. M. M. Joshi Oration 2005; and, Dr.Sankar Benerjea Memorial Award 2006. Dr. S. SANKAR dynamic personality, Dr. S. Sankar has organized several CME programmes and Conferences in Kerala including IAP-ID programmes. He has helped organize and actively participated in 3 National seminars of IAP-ID and organized the Mid Year Teaching Programme workshop and Annual CME of IAP-ID. Dr. S. Sankar’s special fields of interest are Medical Education, Dermatopathology, Bioethics and event management. He has published 11 research papers and has been a regular Under Graduate and Post Graduate examiner to all south Indian Universities. |

The IAP-ID has the following programmes during the course of the year : Those members desirous of organizing and hosting the Mid Year Teaching Programme 2009 or the 12th IAP-ID Annual CME 2009 should send their concrete proposals with the theme of the meeting to the Secretary & Treasurer, Dr. Francisco Couto. For the Annual Meeting 2009 (held along with the IAPM Conference), those desirous of being Moderators for the Symposium or Slide Seminar should send in their names along with the proposed title of the Symposium and Slide Seminar to the Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID. Also as per the decision of the General Body of the IAP-ID certain topics have been suggested as possible subjects for the Slide Seminar and Symposium. Members desirous of being Moderators for any of these topics should send their names to the Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID. However, as per the decision of the Council and General Body of the IAP-ID, the person selected as the moderator shall be the one who is felt to be best suited to be for the particular topic of the Symposium or Slide Seminar. All proposals should reach the Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID, by 15th October 2008, so as the same proposals could be discussed and approved by the Council and General Body of the IAP-ID. | IAP-ID ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2007 |
The Annual Conference of the International Academy of Pathology Indian Division was held on 26th November 2007 at PGIMER, Chandigarh, and delegates from all parts of India and some overseas countries were in attendance. The Conference began with a short Inaugural function at which the Chief Guest was Dr. K. K. Talwar, Director, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, who inaugurated the meeting by lighting the traditional lamp in the distinguished presence Dr. B. N. Datta (the Guest of Honour), Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi (President IAP-ID), Dr. Francisco Couto (Secretary & Treasurer IAP-ID), Dr. Kusum Joshi (Chairperson) and Dr. Rakesh Kumar Vasishta (Organizing Secretary). The Proceedings Booklet of the Meeting was released by Prof. B. N. Dutta. The Scientific Programme followed immediately after the Inaugural function with the Guest lecture delivered by Dr. Jaime Prat, Chairman and Professor of Pathology, Barcelona, Spain, on “Endometrial Carcinoma: Conventional Pathology, Molecular Genetics, and Prognostic Factors”. Later, Prof. Prat also conducted an excellent slide seminar on “Gynaecological Pathology” wherein he discussed some interesting cases. Both the presentations of Dr. Prat were highly appreciated by all the delegates present. The IAP-ID expresses its gratitude and thanks to Dr. Jaime Prat. Following the Guest Lecture was the excellent Slide Seminar on “Melanotic Lesions of the Skin” ably moderated by Dr. Manoj K. Singh (New Delhi). The various cases were beautifully presented and discussed by Dr. Manoj Singh and his panelists Dr Asha Kubba ( New Delhi), Dr S V Kane (Mumbai), Dr Sumeet Gujral (Mumbai), Dr. Asaranti Kar (Cuttack), Dr Shipra Agarwal (New Delhi) and Dr Ruchika Gupta (New Delhi). Slide boxes had been provided earlier, at cost, by Dr. Manoj Singh to those desirous of pre viewing the slides. The Scientific Programme of the Annual Meeting was brought out in the form of a Proceedings Booklet, edited by Dr. Francisco Couto, the Secretary & Treasurer of the IAP-ID, and was distributed to the delegates by the Organizers. The Scientific Programme was followed by the General Body Meeting of the IAP-ID. The President of the IAP-ID Dr. Uma Chaturvedi chaired the Meeting and called the Meeting to order. The Secretary & Treasurer Dr. Francisco Couto read out the Minutes of the last General Body Meeting held at NIMHANS Auditorium, Bangalore on 6th December 2006, the Annual Report for 2007, as well as the audited statement of accounts for 2006 -2007, and these were duly approved by the members. Dr. C. Sundaram and Dr. Sujay Prasad, Councilors, having finished their 2 year term elections were held for these posts. Dr. K. S. Ratnakar (Hyderabad) and Dr. S. Sankar (Trivandrum) was elected as the new Councilors. Dr. K. S. Ratnakar and Dr. S. Sankar were warmly congratulated by Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi, Dr. Francisco Couto and other members present. Dr. Couto also thanked the outgoing Councilors Dr. C. Sundaram and Dr. Sujay Prasad for their dedicated services to the IAP-ID. It was decided that the IAP-ID Annual Meeting 2008 would be held, as usual, at venue of the IAPM Conference and would be held in Chennai and organized by Dr. V. V. Taralaksmi. Besides the Guest Lecture and a Slide Seminar by the invited foreign speaker it was decided that the Slide Seminar would be on “Non Neoplastic Paediatric Pathology” to be moderated by Dr. B. M. Kandalkar (Mumbai) and the Symposium on “Pathology of Aging” to be moderated by Dr. Medha Tatke (New Delhi). The Mid Year Teaching Programme 2008 was allotted to Dr. N. Jayaram (Bangalore) and will be a Workshop on “Medical Renal Diseases”. The IAP-ID 11th Annual CME 2008 was allotted to Dr. Anita Bhaduri, P. D. Hinduja National Hospital, Mumbai, on the topic “Newer Perspectives in Gynecologic Pathology”. Various matters were discussed starting with the IAP Asia Pacific Congress 2009 at Kochi. Dr. K. R. Harilal presented a brief report on the ongoing preparations for the meeting of the Asia & Pacific Divisions of the IAP to be held in 2009 being hosted under the auspices of the IAP Indian Division and organized by the Kerala Pathologists at Kochi, Kerala. Dr. Harilal sought the help and support of the members to make the meeting a grand success. The General Body impressed upon Dr. Harilal the need for urgency in finalizing the arrangements of the meeting. In other matters discussed with permission from the Chair the proposal for reducing the term of the President was not accepted as it was not in keeping with the constitution of the IAP and Dr. Couto, Secretary & Treasurer IAP-ID, was asked to examine other proposals like President Elect. Secretary & Treasurer Dr. Couto proposed that the IAP-ID membership Fees for foreign members from neighbouring poor countries should be fixed at a lower rate than at present which was agreed to and a rate of Rs. 600 was approved the General Body. The General Body felt that for the other foreign members the fees should be increased from the current fee to a fee of US $ 30 per year which was approved. Dr. Francisco Couto, Secretary & Treasurer, informed the General Body of the proposal and discussions held with Prof. V. V. Joshi (representing AIPNA) with Dr. Couto (representing IAP-ID) regarding co-operation between AIPNA and IAP-ID wherein it was agreed that AIPNA would help in providing resource persons for academic programmes only if there was a specific need for such by the IAP-ID on particular occasions and IAP-ID would not be providing a fixed slot for speaker from AIPNA. This was approved by the General Body. The General Body also approved the proposal made by Dr. Couto that the Annual Meeting of IAP-ID be renamed as the Annual Conference of the IAP-ID and also that it should be highlighted that APCON is the joint meeting of IAP-ID and IAPM. Dr. Francisco Couto, Secretary & Treasurer, also proposed the creation of a new category of Associate Members consisting of Post Graduate students and others in keeping with the provisions of the constitution. These Associate members would have no voting rights or other statutory rights of full members and would have to become full members of the IAP-ID on attaining their post graduate qualification. This was approved by the General Body and a fee of Rs. 250 was fixed for these Associate Members and Dr. Couto was asked to formulate the rules for the same. Dr. Francisco Couto, Secretary & Treasurer, on behalf of the IAP-ID, thanked Dr. Jaime Prat, Dr. Ann Marie Nelson, Dr. Manoj Singh and his team and Dr. Kusum Joshi and her panelists for their contribution to the success of the scientific programme. The Secretary & Treasurer Dr. Couto expressed gratitude and thanks to Dr. S. Datta Gupta, Secretary IAPM, for so graciously consenting to having the Annual Meeting of the IAP-ID in conjunction with the IAPM Conference. On behalf of the IAP-ID, Dr. Couto expressed deep appreciation and thanks to Dr. Kusum Joshi, Chairperson, and Dr. Rakesh Kumar Vasishta, Organizing Secretary, for hosting the Meeting and for the excellent arrangements. The Meeting was then concluded and declared closed by the President. |

IAP-ID 10TH ANNUAL CME 2007 Hyderabad |
The IAP-ID 10th Annual CME was held on the 28th and 29th July 2007 at the Katriya Hotel and Towers, Hyderabad, and organized by the Department of Pathology, Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderbad on the theme “Tumour and Tumour like lesions of the Soft Tissues”. The Chairperson of the CME was Dr. C. Sundaram and the Organizing Secretary was Dr. Shantveer G. Uppin. The Scientific programme of the CME was designed to present an overview of the diagnostic approach to these lesions with emphasis on recent classification schemes. The CME was inaugurated by Dr. D. Prasada Rao (Director, NIMS) in the distinguished presence of Dr. M. U. K. Naidu (Dean, NIMS), Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi (President IAP-ID), Dr. Francisco Couto (Secretary & Treasurer IAP-ID), Dr. C. Sundaram (Chairperson), Dr. Shantveer G. Uppin (Organizing Secretary) and other dignitaries. The Proceedings of the CME was released by the Secretary & Treasurer IAP-ID Dr. F. Couto. The CME was extremely well attended with more than 250 delegates from all parts of the country. The deliberations of the CME were relevant to Pathologists, Radiologists, Medical and Surgical Oncologists and invoked keen interest in Pathologists and Clinicians alike. The CME included didactic lectures, interesting case discussions, slide seminars and Panel discussion. The lectures included “Approach to Soft Tissue Tumours”, “Classification and Grading of Soft Tissue Tumours”, Cytology of Soft Tissue Tumours”, “Development of Diagnostics for Small Round Cell Tumours”, “Role of IHC IHC in Soft Tissue Tumours”, “Pleomormhic Sarcomas Current Status”, Tissue Microassay”, and “Uncommon sites, Unusual presentations and Uncertain entities”. Besides this there were two slide seminars, a very interesting Quiz and a Panel Discussion on “Key issues in the Diagnosis and Management of Soft Tissue Tumours” in which Pathologists and Clinicians participated. The distinguished Faculty included Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi, Dr. Roshan Chinoy, Dr. Aruna K. Prayaga, Dr. Tithi Parija, Dr. Sachin Johari, Dr. K. Radhika, Dr. Megha S. Uppin, Dr. D. Snehalata, Dr. Shantveer G. Uppin, Dr. T. Roshini Paul, Dr. Anita Mahadevan, Dr. S. V. N. Anuradha, Dr. D. Raghunadharao, Dr. G. Suryanarayan Raju, Dr. Y. Jyostna Rani, Dr. C. Sundaram, Dr. F. Couto and Dr. Sujay Prasad. The Proceedings of the CME, in the form of a CD, was produced and distributed by the Organizers to the delegates. The CME was excellent and extremely well organized and the delegates found the CME very useful. At the short Valedictory function the Secretary & Treasurer Dr. Francisco Couto, on behalf of the IAP-ID, thanked Dr. C. Sundaram, Dr. Shantveer G. Uppin, and their team for organizing the excellent CME. |
