Greetings in the New Year 2004 By the time this newsletter reaches you many members will have got back to work after a hectic round of academic meetings, beginning with the IAC annual conference in Pune, the IAPM & IAP-ID annual meetings in Bhubaneshwar, and the International CME in Chennai, not to mention the pre- & post conference workshops of the IAPM. Pathologists, like all medical practitioners in this country, seem to have an insatiable thirst for knowledge and will spend considerable time, energy, and money to keep abreast of what is perceived to be new and exciting. CMEs, workshops, seminars and symposia abound. So much so, that it has become difficult to choose from the many on offer. It is therefore very gratifying that over the years the academic meetings of the IAP- ID have been well attended. The annual conference at Bhubaneshwar was no exception. We were treated to a rare lesson in sex education by the renowned French pathologist Prof. Francis Jaubert, who spoke on the pathology of sex determination & sex determinism. This is a subject that has, to my knowledge, not been dealt with before at a non- specialist meeting in this part of the world. I, for one, was fascinated by the ramifications of the subject, especially with regard to the implications for child rearing. This erudite lecture was followed by a well moderated slide seminar on lesions of the nose and paranasal sinuses. Kudos to Prof. Uma Chaturvedi and her team, for so ably covering the common and rare lesions of this site. Dr. C Sundaram moderated a truly wonderful symposium on muscle and nerve biopsies. As a nonspecialist, I can say that all the presentations were clear, concise, and very useful. I congratulate all who took part in the academic sessions. This is by no means the end. The IAP- ID has further academic treats for its members in the year 2004. Enjoy! Which brings me to the biennial event of the IAP, which will be held in Brisbane, Australia, in October this year. The council of the IAP- ID discussed the poor representation from India at previous international meetings of our parent body. The reasons are many. Cost being the most obvious. A representation to fix the registration fee at an affordable level for delegates from developing countries, if sufficient numbers wish to attend, has been made to the organizing secretariat. We await a reply. However, in the meanwhile the secretary Dr. Couto, and myself have been trying to arrange discounts on travel and stay, through various travel agents. It would help us enormously if those members who are interested in attending the Brisbane meeting would send in their names to the secretary Dr Couto, so that block discounts could be strategically negotiated. I hope that many members will avail of this opportunity to attend the conference and visit Australia, which by many accounts is a fascinating country. Prof. Robin Cook, the energetic editor of the IAP newsletter, has always had a very soft corner for India and I am sure that he would do all in his power to make the delegates from India more than welcome to Brisbane which happens to be the city in which he lives. While on the theme of academic meetings, the council also felt that many international meetings did not do justice to the issues pertinent to the practice of pathology in the less developed world. These include a different disease spectrum, training and examinations, technical expertise, the cost and reliability of infrastructure, reagents and technology, the delivery of services to non urbanized areas, accreditation, EQAS, and the exchange of information and interaction with regional and international colleagues. It is time that Asian & African pathologists meet on a common platform
to exchange views and formulate solutions to common problems, rather than
look to the West for a model of sustainable progress in our environment.
I believe that India could take the lead in establishing links with pathology
societies in these countries under the auspices of the IAP. Dr Harilal,
of our division has been elected Vice President, Asia. I congratulate
him on behalf of all the members of the IAP- ID. I am sure that with the
help of the IAP- ID Dr. Harilal and Dr. Couto, who is a nominated member
of the Education Committee of the IAP, will be able to bring about this
meeting of pathologists with common interests. Dr. Anita M. Borges |

| IAP-ID Annual Meeting 2003 Bhubaneshwar |
Prof Jaubert delivering his lecture The Annual Meeting of the IAP-ID was held on 18th December 2003 at the
NALCO Auditorium, Bhubaneshwar, Orissa. There was a large attendance of
delegates from all over India. The IAP-ID was honoured to have Dr. Francis
Jaubert from France, the President elect of the International Academy
of Pathology (IAP), attending the meeting and delivering the Guest Lecture. The Guest Lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Francis Jaubert, President elect of the IAP and currently Professor of Pathology, Hopital Enfant Malades, Paris, France. Prof. Jaubert delivered a very interesting and erudite lecture on “Pathology of Sex Differentiation and Determinism” which was greatly appreciated by all present. The IAP-ID expresses its gratitude and thanks to Prof. Francis Jaubert. The Guest Lecture was followed by an excellent Slide Seminar on “Lesions
of the Nose and Paranasal Sinuses” moderated by Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi
( New Delhi ). Very interesting lesions of the Nose and Paranasal Sinuses
were beautifully presented and discussed by Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi and
her other panelists Dr. C. Sundaram ( Hyderabad ), Dr. Asitava Mondal
( Kolkata ) and Dr. Bishan Radotra ( Chandigarh ). Slide boxes of the
lesions discussed had been earlier provided to those desirious of pre
viewing the slides. The scientific programme of the Annual Meeting was encapsulated in a
Proceedings Booklet, edited by Dr. Francisco Couto, the Secretary &
Treasurer IAP-ID, and was distributed to the delegates by the Organisers. The Secretary & Treasurer Dr. Francisco Couto announced to the members that Dr. K. R. Harilal had been elected by the International Academy of Pathology ( IAP ) as a Vice President ( Asia ). The President Dr. Anita Borges, Dr. Couto and the other members present congratulated Dr. Harilal for this and wished him success in his new post. The Secretary & Treasurer also announced that the Secretary IAP had appointed Dr. Francisco Couto to the prestigious Education Committee of the International Academy of Pathology ( IAP ). Dr. Anita Borges joined the other members in congratulating Dr. Couto for this achievement and wished him all success in his new assignment. Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi ( New Delhi ) and Dr. K. Gayathri ( Hyderabad ) having completed their 2 year term as Council Members elections were held for these posts and Dr. Subir K. Dutta ( Kolkata ) and Dr. A. V. Deshmukh ( Gulbarga ) were elected as the new Council Members. Dr. Subir K. Dutta and Dr. A. V. Deshmukh were congratulated by Dr. Anita Borges, Dr. Couto and other members present. Dr. Couto also thanked the out going Councillors Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi and Dr. K. Gayathri for their dedicated services to the IAP-ID in that capacity. It was decided that the Annual Meeting 2004 would be held at the Armed Forces Medical College ( AFMC ), Pune. Besides the Guest Lecture by invited foreign speaker it was decided that the meeting would include a Slide Seminar on “Splenic Pathology” to be moderated by Dr. K. Gayathri ( Hyderabad ) and a Symposium on “Spectrum of Tissue Pathology in HIV and AIDS” to be moderated by Dr. D. N. Lanjewar ( Mumbai ). It was decided by the General Body that, besides the existing methods for selection of topics for the Slide Seminar and Symposium an additional modality be added, namely, that topics for these be suggested in advance for the next years meeting and moderators be invited for this by the Secretary & Treasurer by way of a suitable announcement in the Newsletter. It was felt that this was needed so as topics would not be restricted only to the ones sent in by the proposers but topics of interest to the members or topics of current interest could also be considered thus widening the selection and spectrum of choice. Also it was felt that by inviting Moderators for the selected topics the Council and General Body could evaluate the credentials and expertise of the concerned individual in that particular area and the person most suitable could thus be selected. This was duly approved by the General Body. Consequently, some topics were suggested for next years Annual Meeting. The topics suggested to be covered for the Slide Seminar are Orbit and Eyeball, Liver and Brain Pathology and for the Symposium topics suggested are Endometrium, Extra Nodal Lymphomas, and Placenta. The Mid Year Teaching Programme 2004 was allotted to Dr. Jaya Deshpande of T. N. Medical College, Mumbai, and will be a “Workshop on Gynaecologic Pathology”. The 7 th IAP-ID Annual CME 2004 was allotted to Dr. S. Sankar, Medical College, Trivandrum, on the topic “ Update on Histologic Grading of Tumours”. The President Dr. Anita Borges expressed that she would like to see a better participation by members from India at various international scientific meetings of the IAP. Dr. Francisco Couto, Secretary & Treasurer, informed the members that the next meeting of the IAP would be in Brisbane, Australia, in October 2004. Dr. Couto also informed that efforts were on to see if some sort of concessions could be given by the Organisers for members from India and also if some sort of travel package at a reduced cost could be worked out with various Travel Agents / Airlines, these being often dependant on the number of delegates from India going to Brisbane. Members requested the Secretary & Treasurer Dr. Francisco Couto to undertake the exercise of getting a rough estimate of the travel costs to Brisbane and back and to publish this information in the Newsletter. Also the members felt that those members interested in going to Brisbane should send their names to Dr. Francisco Couto, Secretary & Treasurer IAP-ID, so as a better idea could be obtained of the number of delegates going from India so as to negotiate for various concessions, group fares, etc. Dr. Francisco Couto, Secretary & Treasurer, on behalf of the IAP-ID,
thanked Prof. Francis Jaubert, Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi and her team, and
Dr. C. Sundaram and her panellists for their contribution to the success
of the scientific programme. The Secretary & Treasurer Dr. Couto also
expressed gratitude and thanks to Dr. Bishan Radotra, Secretary IAPM,
for so graciously consenting to having the IAP-ID Annual Meeting in conjunction
with the IAPM Conference. On behalf of the IAP-ID, Dr. Couto expressed
warm appreciation and thanks to Dr. N. C. Parija, Organising Secretary,
and Dr. Niranjan Rout, Joint Organising Secretary, for hosting the meeting.
