Message from
the President

Let me begin by thanking the members of the IAP-ID for the honour they have done me by electing me as President. I hope that I will fulfill their expectations in the best traditions of the IAP and that of its Indian Division.
The Indian Division of the IAP, which started out as a fledging society, very much in the shadow of the older and more robust IAPM, has now come of age. Thanks to the efforts of its past Presidents, Secretaries and Council members, the Academy has become a vibrant force for continuing professional education in Pathology in this country. Its membership has increased steadily, with many young pathologists swelling its ranks. Here I must mention in a special way the untiring efforts of the dynamic Secretary of the Academy, Dr. Francisco Couto, to whom the credit for running the affairs of the organization and improving the membership drive is largely due. In recognition of his contributions to the Academy, the IAP has appointed him a member of its Education Committee. I congratulate Dr. Couto and look forwards to his continued contribution and association with the Indian Division and the IAP.

The IAP-ID through the good offices of its members conducts two teaching programmes every year apart from its annual conference. All these are well attended. It is however, a matter of regret that few Indian pathologists are able to attend the biennial meeting of the parent body. I believe that the Indian experience is no different from that of its neighbours and other developing countries. It is also true that the IAP conference has seldom, if ever, been held in this part of the world due to logistics involved in bidding for, and organizing such a meet. As a consequence, material from the developing world is seldom highlighted at these meetings. The time is ripe for us to forge links with the IAP divisions of our neighbours to discuss issues of mutual interest.

The IAP-ID in keeping with its parent body must focus on issues related to anatomic pathology. In this regard, it would be fitting and proper to initiate and support activities that would improve the manner in which surgical pathology is practiced in this country. Standardisation of surgical pathology reporting, EQA activities in histopathology, sponsorship of histo-technologist training courses, are some of the initiatives I believe the Indian Division should be thinking about.
I believe that no society can remain vibrant without the active participation of its members. I appeal to all the members to attend the meetings of the society. To attend in particular the general body meeting, and to send in suggestions which will make the Academy a force for excellence in pathology in this country.
Once again I thank the members of the IAP-ID for electing me President. I look forwards to working closely with the members of the Council, and to the active participation of all the members of the general body in making the IAP-ID relevant to the pathology scene in this country.
I wish every one of you a very happy and professionally satisfying NEW YEAR.
Dr Anita M Borges

It was decided that the Annual Meeting 2003 would be held at Bhubhaneshwar, Orissa. It was decided by the General Body that for the post of Vice President ( Asia ) of the IAP the official candidate of the IAP-ID should be the immediate past President as that person would be well versed with recent matters regarding the IAP-ID and be in a better position to interact in the IAP, if elected. Dr. Couto clarified to members that this was merely an official candidate of the IAP-ID for that post and actual election of the individual to the post depended on the IAP. The Secretary & Treasurer had earlier informed members that, Dr. A. N. Srivastava, Lucknow, had earlier sent in his request and then attended the Council Meeting of the IAP at Amsterdam in October 2002 as a representative of Dr. Panchanadam Madanagopalan and Dr. Francisco Couto ( the official Councillors of the IAP representing the Indian Division). Members resolved that Dr. A. N. Srivastava be asked to immediately provide a report on the meeting he attended and send it to the Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID. Members also felt that many times various members attend various meetings of the IAP, present papers, etc, and it would be nice if such members sent in such information to the Secretary & Treasurer so as the IAP-ID is aware of the activities of members and their achievements and other meritorious work and this would help to include this information in the Newsletter whenever needed.

The Secretary & Treasurer, Dr. Francisco Couto, informed the members that, besides the information regarding the IAP-ID being available on the IAP Home Page, the IAP-ID now also has its own web site thanks to the painstaking efforts of Dr. John Marshall Johnson, Bangalore.
